Stakeholder Analysis

Background

The purpose of performing a Stakeholder analysis is to provide the project manager and project team with an overview of the people who have interest in the project

The model provides an overview of how much stakeholders will be affected by the project and how much influence they have on the project

About the model

The model consists of two criteria.

The various stakeholders influence on the project. Who can influence decisions affecting the project and who cannot.

How much the project affects the individual stakeholders. Those who are or will be affected by the project are also usually necessary for the implementation of the project.

The four categories of stakeholders are called:

•External stakeholder

•Hostage

•Grey eminence

•Resource person

External stakeholders, here the project manager should use fewest resources. They have little or no influence on the project and the effect of the project on them is also very low. They will therefore have little interest in the project.

They just need to be oriented towards the project, so they know it exists. A newsletter send by email could do it.

Hostages is a group where the project manager must do more. They have an interest in the project as they are affected by the Project, but they have little or no influence.

The project manager must inform the hostages. They must have the possibility to ask questions.

The group of grey eminences has no deep feelings on the project as it does not affect them. However, they have influence on it. They must feel that the project manager takes them seriously.

They must feel that they are heard.

Resource people are the most important group. They have influence on the project, and they are affected by the project.

It is very necessary that the project manager have them convinced that the project is good for them. They must be positive.

This is best achieved if they are involved in the project.

Either by working with the project or being a member of the project board

Who are the stakeholders and how do we find them

Stakeholders are all those who are affected by the project, as well as anyone who may have influence on the project.

Here you should seek as broad as possible and try to identify stakeholders of all kinds.

Criticism of the model

Stakeholders position can move over time. The model does not consider the dimension of time. You must regularly update this aspect.
